Matteo Berrettini will meet Lorenzo Sonego in the First Round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. The match will be played on Tuesday July 4th, 2023. 

Matteo Berrettini is unseeded here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked 37th on the ATP Tour. After a very long injury layoff, he is still working his way back into form with a modest 7-7 record on the year. He lost his only grass-court match to his same opponent, Lorenzo Sonego, being soundly beaten 6-1, 6-2. His grass court pedigree is unquestioned, having reached the Wimbledon Final two years ago, but it remains to be seen if he is able to shake off the rust in time for his rematch with countryman Sonego. 

Lorenzo Sonego is also unseeded here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked 42nd in the world. The Italian is comfortable on all surfaces, and has a true all-around game. He is having a decent season but struggled since the switch to grass, losing last week in the First Round in Eastbourne. However, he will have some confidence on his side as he recently defeated his current opponent Matteo Berrettini in Stuttgart. If he is able to focus and keep his game together, he should be considered the slight favorite here. 

This should be a very interesting match and it can really go either way. Most punters will likely side with Lorenzo Sonego given his recent head to head victory but I am doing the opposite and picking Matteo Berrettini. He is a quality player, and tends to raise his game when it matters most. He is also a former Finalist here, and even though he will likely start slowly, I am backing him to figure it out eventually and get the win. Top players are very difficult to beat over five sets and I expect this to be the case here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
