Sebastian Baez is the 6th seed here at the 2023 Lyon Open and is ranked 44th in the world. With a career high ranking of 30, Baez has been consistently solid over the past few seasons but is seeking to truly break out. Almost all of his 15 wins this season (14) have come on clay, but he hasn't been great lately, recenty losing in a Challenger Semi-Final in Turin. While his form recently has been quite poor, he did win a clay court title earlier this season in Cordoba, and should be considered the favorite here against Marton Fucsovics.
Marton Fucsovics is unseeded here at the 2023 Lyon Open and is ranked 80th in the world. However, he is a much better player than his ranking suggests, once ranked at 31, but most of his success has come on hard courts. After losing to Cam Norrie in straight sets last week at the Italian Open, he will be hoping for better luck this week but has been handed a tough draw against Sebastian Baez. He does have the experience and upside to win here, but will have to shed the inconsistencies and errors that have plagued him recently.
This should be a straightforward win for Sebastian Baez. Marton Fucsovics is no slouch and is fully capable of getting the win, however he has been maddingly inconsistent and this is his least favorite surface. If he serves well he can stay in it, but Baez is an elite mover and returner, with enough firepower to get the job done here. I'm not fully trusting him to win in straight sets, but I'm backing the Argentine to move on to the Round of 16 here at the 2023 Lyon Open.
