Tommy Paul will meet John Isner in the Quarter-Finals of the 2023 Hall of Fame Championships. The match will be played on Friday July 21st, 2023. 

Tommy Paul is the top seed here at the 2023 Hall of Fame Championships in Newport. The world number 14 is one of the main contenders to win the title here, and he looked good in his 6-4, 6-2 win over Ethan Quinn in the Round of 16. He is having a solid season with a 25-15 record and should be considered the slight favorite here against former champion John Isner, but will need to improve his serving, having been broken quite a few times by Quinn. As we all know, dropping serve against Isner too often will likely result in a loss. 

John Isner is unseeded here at the 2023 Hall of Fame Championships and is ranked 126th in the world. After looking sloppy in his First Round win over Alex Bolt, he was dominant in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Corentin Moutet. Isner’s formula is simple – hold serve comfortably and try to get a couple breaks, something that the four time champion at Newport will need to do against Tommy Paul. While he is the slight underdog here, he is the more experienced grass court player, and regardless of his form, his serve is one of the biggest weapons on the tour. 

Despite the gulf in rankings between the two Americans, I am expecting a very close match. On any other surface I think Tommy Paul would clinch this comfortably, but Isner’s serve and experience on grass add a whole new dimension to his game. He is very comfortable here, where he has won four championships and he won’t go down without a fight, despite his poor recent form. All things considered, I am going to go with Tommy Paul in three sets. He is the much better player at this stage of their careers, and I think he will have just enough to edge fan-favorite Isner here at the 2023 Hall of Fame Championships.
