South Korea and Spain face off on Sunday in a women’s basketball showdown in the 2020 Olympics. This is the opening women’s basketball game of the Olympics. South Korea and Spain are competing in Group A.
The last time these two teams faced off was in September of 2010 and it was South Korea that came away with the 84-69 victory.
It was a bit shocking to many that South Korea even made the Olympics, but they can’t be happy with just getting into the tournament. The last time these two teams were in the Olympics was in 2008. South Korea had to beat Great Britain during the FIBA qualifying tournament to get into the tournament. The best players for South Korea are Ji-Su Park and Hyejin Park. Park has been playing for the Las Vegas Aces, and she has gotten better as this season has gone on. Outside of the two Park’s, South Korea doesn’t have a whole lot of scoring threats and that could be a big issue in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is Spain, who feel like this is a group that they can win. Spain can’t feel good about how they looked at EuroBasket finishing in seventh place, but they were missing a key piece in Alba Torrens. Torrens scored 22 points in an exhibition game heading into the tournament, but outside of Torrens, there are still a whole lot of questions for this team. Raquel Carrera and Maite Cazorla are two young standouts who are going to be leaned on heavily if this team wants to have success.
This is a big number to lay with Spain, and I am not comfortable doing it. I think Spain finds a lot of success in this game, and this game won’t be all that close, but the 25 points are too many to lay. Back South Korea to cover the spread.
