North Texas went 2-3 over their first five games, beating UTEP and Texas Southern while falling otherwise to SMU and UNLV. After wins over Florida Atlantic and Louisiana Tech, the Green lost to UTSA then beat Western Kentucky.
In the FIU game, the Mean Green rolled to a 45-14 halftime edge. North Texas cruised in the second half during an eventual 52-14 blowout win. QB Austin Aune put up 414 yards with five scores and two picks. Stone Earle added 60 rush yards and a TD.
Over on the UAB side, they went 2-2 in their first four games this year with wins over Alabama A&M and Georgia Southern mixed with losses to Liberty and Rice. the Blazers then beat Middle Tennessee and Charlotte before losses to Western Kentucky and FAU.
Matched up with UTSA, the Blazers fought back from an early 18-10 deficit to force overtime. After two extra periods UAB had a 44-38 loss. QB Jacob Zeno managed 332 yards with two scores and an interception. DeWayne McBride rushed 19 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
The Green are 6-0 ATS in their last six overall and 11-0 ATS in their last 11 conference games. Tulane is 7-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Blazers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six in November and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 versus a team with a winning record. UAB is 22-10-2 ATS in the last 34 at home.
PICK: I’m probably staying with North Texas. The Green made short work of a spotty FIU team in their last outing, posting 623 total yards, 27 first downs and a great 12-of-15 on third-down tries. North Texas held the Panthers to 258 yards and 12 first downs on the other side.
As for UAB, they took a tough loss to UTSA despite 553 total yards and 26 first downs. The 10 penalties certainly didn’t help, nor did the spotty 6-of-14 on third downs. It won’t get any easier this week.
