St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals couldn’t do much right in the Monday opener matchup of this series. St. Louis came away with just five team hits (giving up 16) in an 11-1 loss. Andrew Knizner (solo home run) had the lone RBI. On Tuesday the Cardinals gave up five runs in the fourth inning and tumbled to a 6-3 loss. Richie Palacios managed a solo homer in the defeat.

For the starter job Wednesday it’ll be St. Louis’ Matthew Liberatore. Over his 12 games (11 starts) this year Liberatore is 2-5 with a 6.15 ERA and 35 Ks in 50.0 innings. Liberatore is 1-3 with a 6.83 ERA over his last seven starts.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to stick with the Pirates in this one. Probably staying away, though. Much of that is due to Liberatore being on a pretty shaky run these days. In two of his last three starts, Liberatore has 10 earned runs in just 10.0 innings of work. Sandwiched between those is a win with 8.0 innings of clean ball versus the Rays. Needless to say it’s difficult to tell what we’ll get from Liberatore here. On Tuesday the Pirates really only had the one big inning on offense but that was more than enough. That makes six or more runs in three of the last four games, and I like Pittsburgh to keep it up Wednesday.
