The Fordham Rams and the Manhattan Jaspers meet Friday in college basketball action from Draddy Gymnasium. Fordham is coming off a 10-point win over Columbia in their opener. Fordham had a rough campaign in 2020-21, finishing just 2-12 overall and 2-11 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Rams landed in last place in the standings with that effort, and lost 53-49 to George Washington in the first game of the conference tournament.
The Rams were able to come up with a 77-67 win over Columbia in their 2021-22 season opener this week. Fordham posted 49 points in the first half and held on for the victory. Tops in scoring was Darius Quisenberry with 25 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Jaspers’ side, their run last season wasn’t great either. Manhattan went 7-13 overall and 6-12 in MAAC play, finishing above only Rider in the conference standings. In the MAAC Tournament, the Jaspers lost 59-58 to Fairfield in OT during the first game.
Manhattan also kicked off this season with a win, taking out Manhattanville 99-42 after a 54-19 first-half edge. Anthony Nelson came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points with four rebounds, and Jose Perez dished out 12 assists with six points as well.
Manhattan is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Friday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win. The Jaspers are 1-5 ATS in their last six as a favorite.
Meanwhile, the Rams are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 5-16 ATS in their last 21 Friday games. Fordham is 16-35 ATS in their last 51 after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to try Fordham, but probably staying away. The win over Columbia was pretty solid overall, but the Rams faded a bit down the stretch. Still, Fordham held the edge in rebounds (36-34) and turnovers (10-16) which went a long way toward controlling the outcome.
As for Manhattan, they performed as expected in their cupcake opener matchup, but it’s difficult telling how competitive the team will be after the one warmup game. I like this one to be a lot more competitive, with the Rams eking out a cover late.
