The Norfolk State Spartans and the New Mexico Lobos meet Tuesday in college basketball action from the Pit. Norfolk State is 9-3 this year so far. The Spartans lost to Wichita State in their last game. As for New Mexico, they’re 6-6 on the season and coming off a loss to SMU. Norfolk State got off to a nice 5-0 start this year before hitting a blowout loss to Xavier. The Spartans beat Regent VA, Hampton, Grambling State and UNC Wilmington in their next quartet before losses to Hampton and Wichita State.

In the Wichita State game, the Spartans were outscored 29-23 in the first and 42-35 in the second on the way to a 71-58 loss. Dana Tate led the team on 22 points with eight rebounds, and Christian Ings added 11 points with four assists.

Over on the Lobos’ side, they went 4-2 over their first six games with losses to Colorado and UAB. New Mexico has gone 2-4 in six games since then, falling to Towson, New Mexico State, UTEP and SMU along the way.

In the SMU matchup on Sunday, the Lobos were down by 16 points at halftime and couldn’t get any closer in an eventual 90-72 loss. Jamal Mashburn Jr. finished on 25 points, and Jaelen House added 16 points and seven assists.

The Lobos are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 at home and 5-2 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games. The over is 4-1 in New Mexico’s last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last six Tuesday games and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 overall. Norfolk State is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 after an ATS win.

PICK: I’m probably going to stick with New Mexico. The Lobos had major issues with SMU in their last game, shooting a cold 37.7 percent and getting out-rebounded 48-32 overall. Still, New Mexico has been scoring well over their last five games, with 69 or more points in each outing.

As for the Spartans, they’ve generally been good on offense this year but have posted a combined 115 points over their last pair. Norfolk State is going to have to hit the gas in order to keep up here, and I don’t think they’ve got the legs to do it.
