Akron managed to take out St. Francis PA 30-23 in overtime during their opener this year, then lost to Michigan State 52-0 in the next game. The Zips took another big loss 63-6 versus Tennessee, then lost again 21-12 in game four versus Liberty.
In the Bowling Green game, the Zips scored in every quarter but were unable to catch the Falcons in a 31-28 loss. Akron QB DJ Irons managed 224 yards with two scores and a pick, while also leading the rush with 23 carries for 105 yards.
Over on the Ohio side, they eked out a 41-38 win over Florida Atlantic in their opener. The Bobcats would then lose their next pair, falling 46-10 to Penn State and 43-10 to Iowa State. In game four, Ohio bagged a high-flying 59-52 win over Fordham.
Matched up against Kent State on Saturday, the Bobcats blew a 17-10 fourth-quarter lead and ultimately lost 31-24 in overtime. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke put up 322 yards with two scores, and Seth Bangura led the rush on 99 yards and a TD from 18 carries.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Ohio but not touching this one. The Bobcats coughed up a whopping 736 yards of offense and 7.7 yards per play in their loss versus Kent State. It’s somewhat surprising that the loss margin was only seven points, but Ohio also benefitted from nine Kent State penalties and a couple of fumble recoveries.
As for Akron, they scored in every quarter against Bowling Green but ultimately couldn’t overcome eight penalties and three turnovers in the tight loss. Otherwise the Zips’ stat lines from that game don’t look too bad. In any case, this one’s probably too close to call; seems like a coin flip depending on how each team looks.
