Draftkings WNBA Showdown Picks: Mercury vs. Storm 9/7/24

Draftkings picks and predictions for tonight's Mercury vs. Storm matchup.

Phoenix Merucry vs. Seattle Storm
September 7, 2024 9:00 pm EDT

The WNBA presents a matchup between the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm. Let’s take a look at this game from a Draftkings perspective.

Before we dive into the Phoenix Mercury vs. Seattle Storm game let’s review the rules for the Draftkings single game showdown contest.

Draftkings Single Game Showdown Contest Rules

You have $50,000 to utilize on five players from either team. However, one of those players will be designated as your team captain. The captain accumulates 1.5 times the standard fantasy points. Additionally, the captain is 1.5 times the standard cost of the flex position.

The remaining four players in your lineup will receive the standard fantasy points. Having stated that, it is highly important for you to identify the correct player for your captain position if you hope to win a large field DFS GPP (guaranteed prize pool) showdown contest.

If you have additional questions regarding the rules for the single game showdown contest, I recommend that you check out the Draftkings website for more details.

*I recommend that all readers review the starting lineups for both teams prior to setting your DFS lineup for this one game slate.

Here are my Draftkings picks for this evening’s Phoenix Mercury vs. Seattle Storm matchup.

Draftkings WNBA Showdown Picks

Captain-Nneka Ogwumike, Forward, Seattle Storm $9,800

Seattle forward Nneka Ogwumike has been the leader in the paint that the Seattle Storm have needed to win games this season. Having stated that, how has the talented Seattle forward been playing from a statistical perspective? Let’s review Ogwumike’s recent game data to answer that question.

In the 31 games that Nneka Ogwumike has played for the Seattle Storm in the 2024 WNBA regular season, Ogwumike is averaging a whopping 16.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 0.6 blocks a game.

Looking closer at the data just presented, in the 31 games that Nneka Ogwumike has played for the Storm in the 2024 WNBA regular season, Ogwumike averaged 35.5 Draftkings points a game.

I also like Nneka Ogwumike’s matchup this evening. Why? Ogwumike will face a Phoenix Mercury team that has been vulnerable on the defensive side of the basketball this season. Through 33 games played in the 2024 WNBA regular season, the Phoenix Mercury are currently ranked ninth in total team defensive rating (104.4), 12th in defensive rebound percentage (68%), and 12th in total opponent second chance points allowed a game (12.6). Clearly, the defensive data just presented tells us that the Phoenix Mercury are not a good defensive basketball team.

In my opinion, Seattle forward Nneka Ogwumike is the most likely player to post the most fantasy points in tonight’s game. For that reason, I am rolling with Nneka Ogwumike as my captain for this Draftkings WNBA Showdown slate.

Flex Plays

Kahleah Copper, Guard, Phoenix Mercury $8,200

Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper has been one of the few bright spots for a Phoenix Mercury team that has struggled at times this season. Let’s take a look at Copper’s recent game data to better shed light on my previous statement.

In the 34 games that Kahleah Copper has played for the Phoenix Mercury in the 2024 WNBA regular season, Copper has averaged a robust 23.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and one steal a game.

More recently, in the Phoenix Mercury’s 74-66 win over the Atlanta Dream four days ago, Phoenix guard Kahleah Copper played exceptionally well from a statistical perspective. More specifically, Kahleah Copper tallied a whopping 28 points, three rebounds, and four assists in 32 minutes played in the Mercury’s victory over the Atlanta Dream.

Additional players I like to play well this evening (Draftkings price noted): Diana Taurasi, Guard (Phoenix Mercury) $7,000: Skylar Diggins Smith (Seattle Storm) $9,400: Sophie Cunningham, Guard (Phoenix Mercury) $6,200.
