The San Diego Padres look to stay hot when they close out a four-game series on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies. The Padres have won two of the first three games this series.
The Rockies have now lost three of their last four games and aren’t helping themselves with a lack of offense. The Rockies have scored just nine runs in the first three games of this series, and Carlos Gonzalez is 2-12 at the plate. The Rockies pitching has been OK for the most part, as they’ve held teams to four or fewer runs in four of their last seven games, and Franklin Morales hopes to keep that up. Morales is 0-1 this season with an ERA of 6.39, and he’s walked seven batters in 12.2 innings. Morales is 0-2 with a 6.28 ERA in 14 career games against the Padres.
USA TODAY Sports
The Padres have won five of their last seven games and will have a chance Thursday to get back to a .500 record. Jedd Gyorko leads the Padres with eight RBI and has gotten on base at least once in six straight games. The Padres pitching continues to be lights out, as they’ve allowed more than three runs just twice in their last eight games. Ian Kennedy will take the mound Thursday with a 1-2 record and an ERA of 4.24. Kennedy has 16 strikeouts in 17 innings and has walked just three batters. In 15 career starts against the Rockies, Kennedy is 3-3 with a 2.80 ERA.
The Rockies are 7-2 in Morales' last 9 starts as an underdog and 7-3 in Morales' last 10 road starts. The Padres are 4-0 in Kennedy's last 4 starts following a team loss in their previous game and 9-4 in their last 13 games as a favorite.
Although Morales has been great as an underdog, he hasn't shown enough this season to be worth a bet. Morales has been a walking machine and is giving up runs left and right. Meanwhile, the Padres have been red hot and Kennedy has been tough to hit early in the season.
I'll take the Padres at home for the fairly low price.
