The Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers will begin a three-game series on Friday night.
The Angels had Thursday off and could have used the extra day to get their head straight after losing three of their last five games. The Angels are 7-8 on the season and simply not getting consistent production from the bat or the pitching staff. The Angels have allowed 25 runs in their last five games and Mike Trout has struck out 16 times in 65 at bats. One pitcher who has really struggled is Jered Weaver, who is 0-2 on the season with a 5.79 ERA and has walked seven batters in 18.2 innings. Weaver is 3-4 with an ERA of 4.97 in 10 career starts against the Tigers.

The Tigers split a series against the Cleveland Indians and have now split their last six games. A loaded Tigers lineup has been held to two or less runs in five of their last eight games, and Miguel Cabrera is batting .250 on the season. The Tigers pitching staff has kept them in most of their games, and Drew Smyly will get his first start of the season. Smyly is 1-0 this season and has yet to give up a run in six innings of work. This will be Smyly’s first career start against the Angels.
The Angels are 8-2 in Weaver's last 10 starts vs. American League Central and 19-9 in Weaver's last 28 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Tigers are 2-5 in Smyly's last 7 starts vs. a team with a losing record and 58-28 in their last 86 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Angels are 9-0 in the last 9 meetings.
The Angels had a day off to regroup and have won the last nine games against the Tigers. We're getting plus money with the Angels. There's value in this spot, which is why I'll back LA.
