The Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers meet Tuesday in MLB action from Comerica Park. The Mariners are coming off a series versus the Angels. Seattle managed wins Thursday and Sunday to split that set. As for the Tigers, they played the White Sox over the weekend. Detroit managed only one win in that set on Saturday. Seattle lost 3-2 to the Angels on Friday and 12-5 on Saturday, but managed victories 6-2 in the Thursday game and 9-5 on Sunday. In the Sunday victory, Mariners starter Logan Gilbert put up 5.0 innings with one earned on two hits with four walks and seven Ks.

For the starter job in the Tuesday matchup, the Mariners are sending out Marco Gonzales. Over his 32.1 innings of work this year, Gonzales has 29 hits, 18 earned runs, seven homers, 12 walks, 29 strikeouts and a 5.01 ERA.

Over on the Tigers’ side, they posted a 4-3 victory over the White Sox on Saturday but otherwise lost 4-1 Thursday, 9-8 Friday and 3-0 Sunday. In the Sunday loss, Tigers starter Jose Urena lasted 5.0 innings with three earned on six hits.

For the starting job in the Tuesday game, the Tigers will go with Matthew Boyd. Over his 62.1 innings this year, Boyd has 55 hits, 29 runs (27 earned), six homers allowed, 18 walks, 51 strikeouts and a 3.90 ERA.

The Mariners are 4-0 in their last four in game one of a series and 4-10 in their last 14 road games. Seattle is 15-38 in their last 53 Tuesday games and 4-1 in their last five versus a lefty starter.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are 10-3 in their last 13 Tuesday games and 76-164 in their last 240 overall. Detroit is 38-83 in their last 121 home games and 51-112 in their last 163 after a loss.

PICK: I’m sticking with the Mariners in this one. Boyd has struggled over his last four outings, posting a 7.84 ERA. That run follows a 1.94 ERA over Boyd’s first seven starts. As for Gonzales, he should be good for four or five innings here after a successful return from the IL. Should be an interesting matchup but I think the Mariners can eke it out.
