The Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in MLB action from Busch Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to bounce back from a 3-2 loss at the hands of St. Louis on Tuesday. Pavin Smith and Eduardo Escobar each had an RBI to make up the scoring for the D-Backs in the losing effort while Josh VanMeter and Christian Walker each had a double with VanMeter going 2 for 4 at the dish. Josh Reddick and Josh Rojas each had a base hit as well to cap off the offense for Arizona as the Diamondbacks had just six hits as a team in the loss. Caleb Smith took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the year after allowing two runs on four hits while striking out eight over five innings of work. Riley Smith will start here and is 1-3 with a 5.71 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. This will be Smith’s first career start against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will try to build on their win over the Cardinals in their last game. Nolan Arenado had a two-run home run, going 2 for 3 at the dish while Tommy Edman went 2 for 4 with an RBI as well to round out the scoring for the Cardinals in the win. Dylan Carlson and Eduardo Sosa each had a base hit to cap off the offense for St. Louis as the Cardinals had just six hits as a team in the win. Carlos Martinez got the win to improve to 4-9 on the year after allowing one run on four hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Alex Reyes closed out the final two innings for his 19th save of the season. Kwang Hyun Kim will start here and is 1-5 with a 3.98 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. This will be Kim’s second career start against Arizona.

Arizona is 14-48 in their last 62 road games and 3-13 in their last 16 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games as a road underdog. St. Louis is 5-15 in their last 20 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 3-0-2 in their last 5 home games. The under is 10-1-1 in the last 12 meetings between these twl teams in St. Louis.

I’m not eager to back either side here, as the Diamondbacks are back to struggling on the road and the Cardinals shouldn’t be in a position to lay this kind of juice. Instead, I’m going to side with the over. I don’t trust Arizona’s pitching situation and Kwang Hyun Kim is more than prone to giving up runs himself. I look for this one to come in over the number, especially on such a quick turnaround.
