The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres meet Friday in MLB action from Petco Park. Pittsburgh is fresh off a series versus the Rockies this week, winning two of three games. As for the Padres, they played the Brewers in their last set. San Diego lost two of three in that series. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Pittsburgh managed to eke out a 2-1 win over the Rockies on Monday, then the Pirates fell 2-1 themselves on Tuesday. In the Wednesday finale, Pittsburgh powered out a 10-5 win. Mitch Keller entered the game to provide 3.1 innings with one earned on five hits and a walk.

For the starter gig in the Friday game, the Pirates are sending out Jose Quintana. In his eight starts this year Quintana is 1-2 with a 2.43 ERA. Over 40.2 innings he’s got 33 hits, 11 earned runs, 15 walks and 34 Ks.

Over on the Padres’ side, they eked out a 3-2 win over the Brewers on Monday. San Diego couldn’t keep it going however, and fell 4-1 Tuesday before a 2-1 Wednesday loss. Padres starter Yu Darvish put up 6.2 innings with two earned on three hits and two walks.

San Diego will go with Sean Manaea in the start Friday. In eight starts this year Manaea is 2-3 with a 4.04 ERA. Over his 49.0 innings he’s put up 22 earned, 39 hits, 16 walks and 55 Ks.

The Pirates are 9-19 in their last 28 versus the NL West and 21-54 in their last 75 road games. Pittsburgh is 15-40 in their last 55 road games versus a lefty starter.

Meanwhile, the Padres are 4-0 in their last four Friday games and 4-0 in their last four in game one of a series. San Diego is 10-1 in their last 11 after a loss.

PICK: I’m going to stay with the Padres. Manaea has been pretty solid over his last three starts; in that time he’s got 10 earned in 19.0 innings on 18 hits and five walks. As for Quintana, he gave up two earned on seven hits and a walk in 3.2 innings during a loss his last time up, but he had a couple of really nice starts going before that. I like both guys to post quality outings here in a lower-scoring matchup. Should be a fun one.
