Andrey Rublev vs. Tommy Paul 9/23/20 Hamburg Open Tennis Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-23 00:00:00 EDT

Andrey Rublev meets Tommy Paul in the second round of the 2020 Hamburg Open. Will Rublev continue his amazing run of form and potentially get himself one step closer to a second final in a row here in Hamburg, or will Paul cause another upset like he did against Kevin Anderson?

Andrey Rublev played superbly on Monday against Tennys Sandgren, beating the American 6-4/6-2. Rublev is on fire at the moment and has been on fire for the best part of the last year. Rublev has a sniper serve and amazing groundstrokes which allow him to dominate play from the baseline and from the net. Rublev knows he can beat everyone in the field, especially now that Daniil Medvedev has been knocked out of the tournament by Ugo Humbert. Rublev will give it his all here as he knows it will bring him one step closer to potentially winning the title here in Hamburg.

Tommy Paul came through a hard-fought match against Kevin Anderson in the first round, beating the South American in 3 sets. Paul won the opening set and it looked as if it would be easy going from there onwards. However, Anderson destroyed Paul in the second set, delivering him a bagel winning 6-0. Paul then recomposed himself and came back out to take the 3rd set 6-4. Paul needs to find consistency in his game if he is to finally breakthrough on the main tour and he showed us signs of that on Monday, but can he do it again?

This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 1-0. I do not see Paul winning this match. Rublev is the much better player, has a lot more experience on the main tour, and has a very solid record on clay, unlike Paul who is accustomed to playing on hard courts. Rublev knows he is one of the favourites to win the title here, and he knows he can do it. This means that Rublev will be extremely determined to come out here and give it his all. I expect a straight sets Rublev win.
