Novak Djokovic vs Alexander Zverev

Novak Djokovic meets Alexander Zverev in the semi final of Tokyo 2020 on Friday, July 30th, 2021.

Will we see Novak get himself where everyone expects him to be, in the Final competing for Gold and most likely keeping the Golden Slam dreams alive, or will Alexander Zverev show us that he can beat anyone and everyone on his day?

Alexander Zverev cruised through his quarter final match against the power hitting and experienced Jeremy Chardy who does not give up easily. Zverev has been able to show us all tournament that he is definitely improving as he matures as a tennis player, controlling his serve a bit more. Alexander has not lost a set yet this week and he will know that his next opponent, Novak Djokovic, is in the same category, so he will have his work cut out for him as he aims to make the Final in Tokyo.

Novak Djokovic dominated in his quarter final match much more easily than anyone expected him to, beating Kei Nishikori in 2 sets 6-2/6-0. Novak Djokovic knows that he is the favourite here in Tokyo and he should be winning each match in a dominant fashion. Looking at the remaining draw, Novak will strongly believe in himself that he can win and his only threat left is Alexander Zverev in this semi final. Novak cannot take this match too lightly as this is really the Final in terms of rankings and best players left in the tournament.

This is going to be the 9th meeting between both of these players, with Novak having won 6 of their 8 prior encounters. They are great rivals and their matches are always so entertaining. Their head to head could have even been 4-4 if Alexander won their prior two matches this year which he should have because the was the better player throughout. Alexander will know that he is going to have a chance here, but I think the mental game is won by Novak because of their last 2 encounters this year. Novak will make his way to the final in search for Gold in Tokyo.
