Jannik Sinner vs Steve Johnson

Fifth seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy will face unseeded American Steve Johnson in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Citi Open held in Washington. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday August 6th, 2021 at approximately 3:20pm EST.

Jannik Sinner (5) has been a sensation since breaking out on the ATP tour a few seasons ago, and is one of the most promising young players in world tennis. Now that some of the top seeds have exited, he is the big favorite to lift the trophy here at the 2021 Citi Open to claim his third career title. Next up in his path is the veteran American Steve Johnson, who will be relishing the chance to play in the Quarters on home soil. Can Johnson cause the big upset and send the tennage phenom packing?

Jannik Sinner is the fifth seed here at the Citi Open and is ranked 24 in the world rankings. After a fantastic start to the year where he claimed the title in Adelaide and reached his first Masters-1000 Final in Miami he has plateaued a bit, and will be eager to continue his fine form that he has displayed here in Washington. He has had two strong wins over Emil Ruusuvuori and Sebastian Korda to reach this stage, and his confidence will be sky high. If he plays well he will be the massive favorite here against Steve Johnson.

Steve Johnson is unseeded here at the 2021 Citi Open, and is ranked 81 in the world. Once ranked inside the top 20, he has suffered greatly from injuries and loss of form over the past few seasons, and will be delighted to have reached the Quarter-Finals in his home country of the USA. After a huge upset win over Alex De Minaur in the opening round he crushed Ricardas Berankis with a combination of strong serving and good tactical play. He does not possess the power he once did so tends to rely on smart decision making and using his all-around game to outsmart and grind down his opponents.

This is the second time that they will be playing each other, with Sinner winning the first meeting back when he was a 17 year old. His career has really taken off since then, and should be able to easily overpower his veteran opponent Steve Johnson. If Sinner isn’t focused the American has the quality to make this interesting, but I don’t think that will be the case here. Expect Sinner to have too much firepower here, winning in two comfortable sets to reach the Semi-Finals here at the Citi Open in Washington.
