Denis Shapovalov and Ilya Ivashka meet in the second round of the 2022 tennis Geneva Open.

Denis Shapovalov is coming off a quarterfinal trip in Rome, where he lost to Casper Ruud in straight sets. Shapovalov has split his last 10 matches overall and looks to find some clay court consistency before gearing up for the French Open. In his last effort, Shapovalov saved 14 of 15 break points and won 55 percent of his second serves. Shapovalov obviously will have to be better with his serve if he’s going to make a serious run at a title. Shapovalov hasn’t lost an opening match since Miami. Shapovalov has won six of his last 10 matches on clay court.

Ilya Ivashka is coming off a three sets win over Marcos Giron that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Ivashka won 83 percent of his first serve points and 42 percent of his second serve points. Ivashka won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his nine break points. Ivashka got 61 percent of his first serves in play and saved six of his nine break points. Ivashka showed great fight after dropping the first set and his last six matches have gone the distance. Ivashka looks for back-to-back wins for the first time since Marseille back in February. Ivashka has lost seven of his last 10 matches on clay court.

Shapovalov has won all three meetings against Ivashka, including the most recent meeting this year in Miami. Two of the three matches went the distance, and this will be the first meeting on clay.

Shapovalov has to have the edge here based on the h2h history and the fact he’s having a more consistent season overall. Ivashka has had issues stringing wins together this season. With that said, Ivashka has been super competitive and that includes three matches against the Canadian. I could see this being a long, competitive match. I’d look at the over or siding Ivashka to steal at least a set.
