Reilly Opelka and Casper Ruud meet in the semifinals of the 2022 tennis Geneva Open.

Reilly Opelka is coming off a three sets win over Tallon Griekspoor that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Opelka won 85 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Opelka won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his seven break points. Opelka got 85 percent of his first serves in play and hit 14 aces. Opelka has hit 27 aces in his first two matches this tournament. Opelka has now won six of his last seven matches that have gone the distance. Opelka looks to make his fourth final of the year and his seventh final trip of his career. Opelka has split his six matches on clay court.

Casper Ruud is coming off a straight set win over Thanasi Kokkinakis that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Ruud won 90 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Ruud won 76 percent of his total service points and converted on one of his two break points. Ruud got 63 percent of his first serves in play and saved both of his break points. Ruud has won five of his last six matches, and four of those wins were decided in straight sets. Ruud looks to reach his third final of the year and his 11th final appearance of his career. Ruud has won five of his last six matches on clay court.

Ruud has won three of the four meetings against Opelka, including the last three meetings. The most recent match was last year in the Laver Cup. Opelka’s only win over Ruud came in a 2017 qualifying match for the Australian Open.

Ruud is going to be favored for obvious reasons, as he owns the h2h convincingly, is the top-10 player, and he’s more comfortable on clay. However, Opelka is having a hell of a season, he was competitive against Ruud despite the losses, and he’s piling up tons of free points. If Opelka can keep hitting double-digit aces and not have to work so hard on his serve, he has a chance here.

Assuming we get decent plus money, I’ll take a chance with Opelka.
