He is set for a Second Round All-American battle against Marcos Giron, and will be in for a challenge after a First Round Bye. He has had a strong start to the season with a 10-3 record and will be backing himself to do well here at home. His serve and powerful groundstrokes are major weapons on this surface and he will have to overpower the more consistent Giron.

Marcos Giron is unseeded here and is the 73rd ranked player in the world. The American has been solid this season with an 8-6 record and recently had back to back Quarter-Final appearances in Delray Beach and Dallas. He lost in the First Round in Acapulco last week but regrouped to win his opener here, over Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets. He is a fighter, and one of the best movers on tour, using his speed and consistency to grind opponents down. His opponent Frances Tiafoe has a huge advantage when it comes to power, so Giron will have to play his natural game to try to nullify his countryman.

This will be a very interesting match between two players with totally different game styles. I think it will be close, but I’m backing Frances Tiafoe to get the win here. He generally plays his best tennis on home soil, and after an outstanding 2022 season seems to be full of confidence. Marcos Giron is a solid player for sure but cannot match Tiafoe from the baseline on this surface and I expect him to win in two very close sets.
