Sixth seed Coco Gauff will face fellow teenager Mirra Andreeva in the second round of the 2023 US Open. The match will be played on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

As top seeds continue tumbling in the early goings of this year’s US Open, Coco Gauff narrowly survived that onslaught as she came from behind to beat a tricky qualifier Laura Siegemund 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in almost three hours. In front of the watching glitterati of names such as former US President Barrack Obama and former WTA No. 1 Maria Sharapova, the young American rose to the occasion in a match that had its own moment of controversy. Gauff was entangled in a bit of melee midway through the third set, as she called out Siegemund’s tactics of stalling between points, feeling she was not playing to the server’s pace. The chair umpire handed the German a time violation on multiple occasions and therefore a point penalty late in the third set, before Gauff squeaked out a gutsy win.

Mirra Andreeva also came through her own three-set barnburner beating Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Despite winning two total points less than her opponent, Andreeva won the decisive points in the match, breaking Gadecki a combined four times in sets 2 and 3, as she recovered from a poor start. Since making her Grand Slam main draw debut at this year’s French Open, Andreeva has now won each of her opening matches at this level, and if she intends to match her previous two Slams results where she made to the third round at the very least, she’ll need to score one of the biggest shocks of this year’s US Open.

Coco Gauff won the all-teenage contest at this year’s French Open, overcoming a first-set blip to dismiss Mirra Andreeva 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. The American is the WTA’s in-form player coming to the 2023 US Open, having won 11 of her 12 matches in the lead-up to the tournament. While she did struggle to find her bearings against Siegemund, it has to be noted that the German defeated Gauff in their last encounter on hard courts and her quirky style is incredibly difficult to contain against aggressive players. Luckily for Gauff, she got her tactics right. Andreeva is a precocious talent, but unlike at the French Open, Gauff looks well-versed in her game right now and she’s got our vote to reach the third round at her home Slam.
