Daniil Medvedev will meet Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Semi-Finals of the 2023 Italian Open. The match will be played on Friday May 19th, 2023.
Daniil Medvedev is the third seed here at the 2023 Italian Open, and is ranked third in the world. He has never kept his disdain for this surface a secret, however his results show that he is more than capable. He has only dropped one set so far en route to the Semis here, surprisingly to Bernabe Zapata Miralles, and crushed Yannik Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2 in the Quarter-Finals. His huge serve and defensive abilities are huge weapons on the clay, and even though he is the underdog here, he hates losing to his next opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas and will be fired up for this encounter.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is both the 5th seed here at the 2023 Italian Open and the 5th ranked player in the world. The Greek star has been one of the best clay court players in the world over the past few seasons, and he is the favorite to take the title here after the losses by Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. He has cruised through the draw so far this week, yet to drop a set, defeating good players like Musetti, Sonego and Borna Coric in the Quarter-Finals. He was rolling up a set and a break over Coric when he lost focus for a bit in the second set, something he knows he cannot do against his next opponent Daniil Medvedev. He is the favorite here, but will have to be at his best against the big Russian.
When these two meet it is always a firey encounter, with lots of controversy. One thing is for sure, the tennis will be of a high quality and it will be entertaining to watch. If this was on hard courts I would pick Medvedev, but Tsitsipas has the edge on clay for sure, and has looked a bit more dominant this week. Medvedev will give it his all but I am very confident in Stefanos Tsitsipas getting the win here and moving on to the Final where he will meet either Holger Rune of Casper Ruud.
