Alexander Zverev vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Alexander Zverev meets Nikoloz Basilashvili in the third round of Tokyo 2020 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.

Will Nikoloz Basilashvili come out here ready to knock out one of the best players in the world and cause a big upset, or will Alexander Zverev continue to improve his game as he aims to get himself in the business end of the Tokyo Olympics?

Nikoloz Basilashvili had to fight until the end in the second round, beating the Italian who has had a lot of success in 2021, Lorenzo Sonego. Nikoloz won in 3 sets 6-3/3-6/6-4 and he will be very happy that he was able to maintain his composure during this tight match. Nikoloz has had a very up and down season, winning 2 titles this year but also losing in shocking fashion very early in other tournaments. Nikoloz will want to come out here and find the form that he won his 2 titles this year with as he aims to cause what would be a very big upset?

Alexander Zverev dominated in his second round encounter against the Colombian, Daniel Elahi Galan, beating him in 2 sets 6-2/6-2. Daniel Elahi stood no chance coming into this match because Alexander Zverev was able to dominate from start to finish and get lots of free points from his serve which was on fire. Alexander Zverev will come out in this third round knowing that he needs to be at least making the semi finals here in Tokyo as this will give him either a chance to reach for silver and gold, or fight for bronze and help Team Germany.

This is going to be the 5th meeting between both players, with Alexander Zverev having won 3 of their 4 prior encounters. I expect for this to be an interesting match because we never really know how good Nikoloz Basilashvili is going to be when he enters a match. Going off of their second round matches, it is clear that Alexander Zverev is on fire and he will dominate this match from all aspects, serve, forehand, and backhand. I don’t see Basilashvili standing a chance here as Zverev makes his way to the quarter finals.
