Novak Djokovic (1) meets Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round of Tokyo 2020 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.

Will Alejandro Davidovich Fokina come out here and play like he has nothing to lose to get a statement win under his belt, or will Novak Djokovic continue to cruise through his matches as he is yet to lose a match on a hard court this year?

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina put on a composed performance throughout the tight match against John Millman on Monday, winning in 3 sets 6-4/6-7/6-3. Alejandro will be happy that he was able to come through that match, but he will also know that he needs to improve his game much more if he wants to stand any chance against the incredibly in form Novak Djokovic. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will come out in this third round knowing that if he does not play lights out, he might as well pack his bags and head to the US.

Novak Djokovic eased his way to victory in the second round, beating Jan-Lennard Struff easily in 2 sets 6-4/6-3. Novak Djokovic is yet to lose a match this year on hard courts and I don’t see him losing any time soon. Novak is just too good on all aspects of his game, having a very solid serve and a great forehand. However, his most important asset is definitely his backhand. Novak is able to play extremely long rallies on his backhand side without missing and this puts opponents in such a tough position because not everyone likes using their backhand consistently.

This is going to be the 2nd meeting between both players, with Novak having won their only prior encounter. Their encounter was earlier this year and Novak destroyed him in 2 sets on clay. Alejandro will have to play the best match of his life if he wants to get anything going in this match. I don’t see that happening however as novak was able to destroy him on clay, so on a hard court he will have an even bigger advantage as he is perfectly suited for these conditions.
