Minnesota Twins
The Twins had an early lead in the Monday opener of this set but ultimately lost 4-1. In the Tuesday game Minnesota gave up four in the first inning on the way to a 6-2 loss. Starter Joe Ryan lasted 3.0 frames with nine hits and six earned runs.
For Wednesday’s finale the Twins will send out Kenta Maeda. In his five starts this year Maeda is 1-4 with a 6.86 ERA and 22 Ks in 21.0 innings. Maeda is 60-45 with a 3.95 ERA in 174 career games (140 starts).
Atlanta Braves
Over on the Braves’ side, they scored three runs in the seventh inning Monday on the way to the victory. In game two Atlanta out-hit the Twins 10-7 but also had four errors. Bryce Elder went 6.0 innings with two earned on four hits and four walks.
As starter for the finale, the Braves will go with Kolby Allard in his season debut. During his career Allard is 9-23 with a 6.07 ERA in 65 games (35 starts).
The Twins are 4-1 in their last five Wednesday games and 2-6 in their last eight road games versus a right-handed starter. Minnesota is 18-39 in their last 57 versus the NL East.
Meanwhile, the Braves are 6-0 in their last six Wednesday games and 5-1 in their last six in game three of a series. Atlanta is 19-7 in their last 26 versus a right-handed starter.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I might take a stab on the Twins here. Probably not touching it, though. Maeda is coming off a nice start in his return to action on June 23 versus the Tigers. He posted 5.0 innings of clean ball on three hits and two walks in his first victory of the year. Maeda will need another one of those to put Minnesota in a good spot for the finale. On Tuesday the Twins had a bit of early success at the plate but couldn’t dig out of the early hole. Minnesota should have some opportunities Wednesday, but they’ll need to be sharper in the finale.
